The Cyprus Green Party expresses its contained optimism for the result of today’s meeting between president Christofias and the Turkish Cypriot leader Talat. The commitment form both sides to immediately implement the 8th of July agreement is a positive outcome. The establishment of a timeline for the commencement of the technical committees and working groups meetings also creates optimism.
But the initiation of negotiations among the two leaders in three months, irrespective of the progress of the committees work and before trust measures bear fruit, is an ambivalent outcome of this meeting.
The 8th of July Agreement could possibly be mutilated and artfully overturned. There is a danger of a three month prolongation of the current impasse, until Turkey´s demand for direct negotiations is granted. Besides, the opening of the Ledra barricade without the general demilitarisation of the walled area of Nicosia cannot satisfy the Cyprus Green Party. Neither can the fact that there is no commitment to open the barricade in the secluded Tulliria area.
In conclusion, without judging the outcome to be negative, we do not find it satisfactory. A lot more needs to be done and a lot of caution must be taken. We support the president of the Republic of Cyprus Mr. Demetris Christofias in this effort.
