The opening of Ledra’s checkpoint to be included in an agreement for the demilitarisation of Nicosia

The Cyprus Green Party supports the opening of Ledra street checkpoint together with the parallel opening of Tylliria and Mesaoria checkpoints.

We believe that the opening of Ledra’s checkpoint should be considered as part of a general plan of demilitarisation of the areas within the Venetian Walls.
The Cyprus Green Party and Turkish Cypriot Party “New Cyprus” had the initiative to promote a proposal for complete demilitarisation of Nicosia, back in 2007. Their common declaration was widely accepted both in Cyprus and abroad.

The proposal for demilitarisation of old Nicosia was officially endorsed by the Government of the Republic of Cyprus, United Nations, the Ambassadors of the five permanent member countries of Security Council and all political parties of Cyprus. During its recent congress, the European Green Party approved a resolution demanding the demilitarisation of Nicosia.
We believe that it’s a realistic target that will lead to the reunion of the divided city.
The demilitarisation of Nicosia will also lead to an end the occupation factors and will promote the re-establishment and the re-settlement of Greek and Turkish Cypriots in the centre of Nicosia.

The opening of Ledra’s checkpoint should soon lead to the complete demilitarisation of Nicosia and to become the start of the demilitarisation of the whole island with the withdrawal of all foreign army forces from Cyprus.
