WORKING COMMITTEES FOR THE ENVIRONMENT

The Cyprus Green Party asks that, within the framework of the application of the 8th of July Agreement, urgent environmental issues in the occupied areas are also dealt with through the creation of environmental working committees.

The Secretary General of the Cyprus Green Party Mr. George Perdikes sent an urgent letter to the President of the Republic Mr. Demetris Christofias, suggesting the inclusion of the environmental aspect to the procedures for the application of the 8th of July Agreement. “Cyprus, as an island, is a unified ecosystem and needs to be treated as such” wrote Mr. Perdíkes.
Mr. Perdikes suggests that experts concretely discuss the need for measures that will enable for the joint administration of Cyprus’s natural resources and natural environment.
Parallel to this, the Greens are also calling that the working committees confront urgent environmental problems in the occupied areas, such as the pollution of the Kseros Bay, the quarry works in Pentadaktylos mountain range, the lack of protection of NATURA 2000 areas, the development schemes for the Karpasia area, the management of liquid and solid waste, the illegal building of holiday residences etc.
Finally, Mr. Perdikes asks to include in the discussions the demolishment of the gigantic flag and slogan that is polluting the mountain slope of Pentadaktylos.
